FullSizeRender (9)Broadway, Here We Come….

Today, campers and staff from both Airy and Louise went to NYC to see School of Rock. They had a great time, but here at Camp Louise we had our own taste of Broadway happening. It was the kick-off rehearsal for the Tony Award winning musical – The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Twenty-two campers (ranging from Unit A all the way up to Trainees) auditioned and were cast in this show about a bunch of fun, quirky kids participating in a spelling bee. I stopped by the theater this afternoon to talk to some members of the cast and the Directors.

Vivian, one of the cast members from Unit D in Senior Camp (who has been in the play for years) commented that the audition process felt very welcoming. She just felt like she was singing and reading the script in front of her friends. Vivian told me that she is sure it’s going to be a great show and she is so excited about being with the friends she knows and meeting new friends too.

I also spoke to Julia from Unit A in Junior Camp. It is Julia’s first time in the Camp Louise musical and she told me that she wanted to try something new and it sounded fun so she auditioned. Things must have gone very well because Julia earned one of the 9 leads in the show. She said that she felt really good about that! Julia also commented that she likes scripts and she gets to memorize fun words to spell and sing. She even gets to misspell an easy word in the show too. She can’t wait for that!

When I debriefed with the Directors, they shared that a goal that they have this summer is to provide a balance for the campers – being in the play and having the opportunity to participate in other camp activities too. Putting on a show at Camp Louise in a short amount of time is a lot of work, but I know these campers and staff members are up for the challenge! This is their chance to shine – whether they are on stage spelling their hearts out or behind stage working lights and sound and painting sets. It takes everyone to put on the production that will take place in just two and a half weeks!

This bunch of quirky, fun kids are about to learn much more than what they bargained for – some things you just can’t find in a dictionary!

Kind of sounds like camp…..
