What a treat for our campers today, as Airy alum Dan Kolko made a visit to the mountain. Dan is a television personality for MASN, covering the Washington Nationals. More than 70 campers and staff spent the morning with Dan, talking to him about baseball, broadcasting and of course growing up at camp.

Dan’s visit to Airy was a prime example of how special camp is. Dan took time out of his schedule to share his story with the current generation of campers. Dan travels extensively and rubs elbows with some famous athletes. He’s kind of a big deal. Yet he found time to come to camp early on a Tuesday morning to hang with our young men. (It would have been pretty cool had Dan been able to stick around for more of the day. When the passing storm forced us indoors, we played a few games of camp-wide bingo. Dan could have interviewed the winners!?!)

Dan feels a strong connection to camp, as do many of our alumni who visit and volunteer their time. Some drive camp vehicles, or help in athletics, or maybe work as registrars on check-in day. Many of our alumni are part of a family chain that has four generations of connections to Airy. In Dan’s case, his uncle Steve works at Airy. In my case, my father is a volunteer, my daughter attends Camp Louise, and my grandfather was a doctor at camp many summers ago.

Airy is a place that can always tell a story.
