July 4th ALL CITs flag

July 4th – a time of patriotic songs, red, white and blue, barbecues, and fireworks. All of these things remind us that it is July 4th, but at Camp Louise we have another July 4th tradition. It is the day that the CITs have the honor of raising the American flag inside the Dining Hall. For our second session campers, they may just assume that the flag is up all the time, but in fact it is our CITs who raise it during a ceremony on the 4th of July every year.
Dressed in all white, the CITs proudly take part in this ceremony. It is something that they look forward to being a part of – a little bit of Camp Louise history and tradition. For decades, it has been the great privilege of the CITs to raise this flag. They all take part in this ceremony, and the honor guard is composed of the CITs who have attended the most weeks throughout their time at camp. This year, 6 CITs were a part of this honor guard, each with a total number of between 34 and 59 weeks spent at Camp Louise.

There are smiles, tears, lots of pictures taken, and so much pride during this ceremony. This year’s CAs are already talking about the white dresses they will buy during the year and the total number of weeks that they have to see who will be in next year’s honor guard. Some Junior Camp campers stopped me today to tell me about the number of weeks they will have by the time they are CITs.
What a remarkable thing! That is a little taste of the magic of camp.

Happy 4th!
