Director’s Blog – July 27, 2015
Tonight was a very special Evening Activity that has become a tradition here at Camp Louise. For the past six years, Rabbi Elissa has planned a hands-on tzedakah project that we call Louise Lends a Hand. This activity teaches Jewish values of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and Tzedakah (righteous giving).
This year, we are serving the clients at Paul’s Place, a community center in Baltimore’s Pigtown neighborhood. Paul’s Place provides its clients a safe place to gather in the community for hot meals, clothing, showers, and tutoring – just to name a few.
Our campers and staff:
Decorated cookies that Paul’s Place will use in their soup kitchen
Prepared sack lunches for their clients to take home with them
Made trail mix for the children who participate in their day camp program
Decorated bags for the lunches and trail mix
Made friendship bracelets for Paul’s Place to distribute to their clients
In addition, our campers learned about Free to Breathe, a national organization funding lung cancer awareness, research, and patient resources. The campers saw pictures from the annual Free to Breathe Yogathon in Baltimore at which dozens of camp staff volunteer each year. This event raises over $40,000 annually. The campers then did some yoga and learned how important breath is – hence, the name Free to Breathe.

Each year after this activity, Rabbi Elissa donates Louise Lends a Hand bracelets to our campers and staff. This serves as a reminder of the good they learned here at camp. It is great to see the campers come back year after year with each added bracelet on their arm or ankle. They truly look forward to this activity at camp and many of them even talk about how this got them hooked on community service.
As one of our founders Aunt Lil used to say at camp – Live the Good You Have Learned Here……
