In the discussion of signature activities and moments that have come to define a camper’s experience at Airy, our “Whirlpool” is always mentioned. So the planning for Airy’s Camper In Training Day 2015 most certainly had to involve the pool, and our visiting campers-in-training would get to participate in the fun.

The 60-plus families that joined us for Camper in Training Day, by all accounts, had a blast playing and living at Airy for the day. The after-lunch visit to the pool was just one stop during a fun-packed day that offered activities and games for both campers and their families. Everyone began together at the Welcome Center and Village Row playground area. The new playground was a big hit, and as the kids played, parents spent some time meeting each other and talking with Airy staff. At 9:45 am, the campers assembled in bunks … away they went.

Campers played kickball, basketball and visited Fun Fact-Airy. Parents were led on guided tours by Airy staff, and then attended their own activities that included Arts & Crafts, Culin-Airy, and Human Anagrams. While the campers were still at play, the parents joined me for a Q & A Panel with a diverse mix of Airy staff. It was very cool during the panel to hear about so many families that have Airy and Louise ties.

We all assembled in the dining hall for lunch – Chef Johnnie and his team certainly impressed our visitors with fajitas. Of course there was also the pasta bar, salad bar and PBJ station … After lunch, the campers were delighted to learn that there was mail awaiting them at the Post Office! The campers read their mail while digging through their backpacks for bathing suits and towels – next stop would be the pool. At the pool, campers played and splashed while some parents took a tour of Airy’s downhill, and others smiled while watching their camper play. A big round of applause to the campers who tested their mettle on the Aqua Climb wall or at log rolling. The swim session came to a fun close with the whirlpool.

The campers and parents’ last stop was a field party. With Kevin on the guitar providing the background ambience, campers were invited to campfires to make s’mores, to jump in our moon bounce, to climb up and zip down the Scissors Tower, and to ride in a dune buggy for a spin around downhill. Our staff hosted and mingled at every station, talking about camp and sharing their Airy stories with campers and parents.
It was our pleasure to host so many families, and to give them a peek at how special Airy is. Our fingers are crossed that, like the t-short says, many new “friends for life” will be joining us in the future. The day could not have been the success that it was without the help and dedication of the Airy staff, CITs and volunteers. I tip my hat to you.
